Since is freezing pretty much on the entire northern hemisphere and a beanie or a hat comes handy perfectly to keep warm and look cool at the same time, and even more if you put together a nice beanie and a rad trend of nowdays: beards. As a bearded man the future of my beard has become a center of multiple conversations over the last couple of days whether I should keep it or nor but with this awesome beardie I’m definitely keeping it.

The Beardo bearded beanie is the lastest design of Beardo Wear, a company responsable for so many cool products mustache and beard related to wear so this is no the exception. If you have $40 bucks and need a warm hat for this butt freezing hell this is definitely the way to go. Buy it here.
It’s mid January and I haven’t done any new year’s resolutions mostly because they’re usually unreal of too far away from our real possibilities so this year I’m thinking about make a list of some fun resolutions like study a new language, learn how to make cocktails for parties or even dance lessons. If you don’t have any resolutions made so far this mixtape might inspire you to do so.

The theme was inspired obviously because of the new year but mostly because Band of Skulls’ Honest songs which is nothing but beautiful and inspiring. Also the title of the mixtape was taken from a rad new year related video titled preciscely Make it Better made by Sebas & Clim, a London-based directors duo whose amazing video full of colors and fonts made me do this. Here’s the tracklist:

Physical Motion by Jimmy Edgar

Yesterday’s Gone by Kele

Everything Will Be Alright by Golden Ages

Out of the Blue by Julian Casablancas

There’s No Secrets This Year by Silversun Pickups

In the New Year by The Walkmen

Honest by Band of Skulls

The photos used for the covers were taken by a German photographer named Iwan Gabovitch whose textures photos are sick, especially his grey concrete texture gallery.
Even when I’m not a man of calendars on the wall it always comes handy to have one especially when it’s awesomely illustrated as this one. The Telenor 2012 calendar was made by three amazing Serbian illustrators named Becha, Monika Lang and Nebojsa Cvetkovic who did such a terrific job with this one. The premise is simple, to illustrate the twelve months but with their unique style which is a blend of antiqueish vibe, rad textures and bizarre collages full of colors which is always a plus for me.

2012 is obviously an Olympic year and the expectations are huge so the calendar has to be sport related but instead of going with the same ol’ familiar sports this team decided to go for the olympic ones such a table tennis, waterpolo or rowing but with such an astonnishing outcome, making me drool over the floor wandering how cool would have one of this beauties decouring my studio walls all over the year. The illustrations I liked the most were made by Becha as you can see. Enjoy.

Hi there, it’s me again after almost two months since I started at this new job and I completely forgot to update the blog every once in a while but I’m coming back mostly because it’s Christmas and I want to share a lot of thing that I love xmas related, some of them are things I remember from my chilhood and some are new like this illustrations for a december calendar titled Christmas is Coming by David Walker for CIC. The concept behind this calendar is to create a daily illustration for each day through december but each illustration has definitely a fun twist.

Taking the Christmas concept and giving it that akward and funny twist is definitely genius basically because we all have done something like this or at least know someome who did it like that drunk women photocoping her ass during the officee christmas party or that knitted deer that reminds me to those ugly sweaters my mother made me wear when I was a child. Despite these fun illustrations the calendar also focuses into those familiar and even religious moments of the month which is perfect to balance it.

I don’t know about you but I’d love to see an entire 2012 calendar with this style and the critic and hilarious point of view of David Walker. Enjoy.

Although Halloween is a very rad holiday because the make up, the candies and the costume parties I had to say as Mexican I do love Día de Muertos or Day of the dead because of the colors, the smells and the flavors not to mention the hope to see those beloved ones who passed away. To celebrate the occassion I found a terrific illustration you see above made by a Tampa-based illustrator and designer Mark Malazarte who capture perfectly all the characteristic of the ancient Aztec tradition that remains until now.

In Día de Muertos! Mark took the aesthetic of this tradition and make them even cooler, making me also drool just to imagine this beauty haging on my studio walls but sadly I haven’t found any info about this illustration being sell as a print so if you have any please send me a holla or leave a comment so I could get mine. Enjoy.

First lemme start apologizing for not posting for the last couple of weeks now but with my new job my life is changing, hopefully for good. That being said now it’s time for a new mixtape now inspired by the season. Is that time of the year where people invite you to costume parties and see kids trick or treating over the street, and even when in Mexico we celebrate Día de Muertos -day of the dead- we do enjoy the costum and the candies that comes with the American Helloween, not to mention the occasional scary mixtape. I choose some of the music I listen to when the mood is right, it is full of some spooky tunes, I really hope you like it. This is the tracklist:

Tortured by Otep

Halloween by John Carpenter

The space in between by How to Destroy Angels

Somebody’s watching me by Rockwell

Animal by OMNI ft. Tiki Lewis

Bela Lugosi’s dead by Bauhaus

Experiment in terror by Fantômas

Count in fives by The Horrors

In the room where you sleep by Dead Man’s Bones

The ghost who walks by Karen Elson

In this light and on this evening by Editors

Maitre de ma peau… by Dernière Volonté

Bone jump by Brian Eno

Where the darkness is deepest by Lunatic Soul

Requiem by Otep

I hope this 42 minute mixtape would be the perfect companion for your to trick or treat or just listen to on a dark night, it is also perfect to listen before you fell sleep especially with headphones, trust me. The photos I used to do the covers are from a talented guy named Simon Crubellier.
In music as in literature the opening sentence is really important to cautivate the listener although finding great opening lyrics is not that easy even for bands like The Beatles or The Smiths. Even when starting with a great line is not necessarily basic for a song to succeed or became and anthem it certainly set the mood for the rest of it, living a hunger for more after that great first sentence. Here’s the tracklist:

1. Simon & Garfunkel - The sound of silence

2. Monaco - Billy Bones

3. The Smashing Pumpkins - Ava Adore

4. Radiohead - 15 step

5. Phantogram - Running from the cops

6. Fiona Apple - Criminal

7. Piano Magic - The faint horizon

8. Kurt Vile - Puppet to the man

9. The Smiths - I want the one I can’t have

10. The Beatles - Norwegian wood (the bird has flown)

11. Mercury Rev - Spiders and flies

This mixtape is some sort of continuation of the last one, and as you can imagine is also a long list of great opening lines. I’d love to know some of your favorite opening lyrics so be sure to leave a comment below or on the <a title="Have a question? BY ANDREA AUSTONI

The simple idea of printing souls is as interesting as the graphic proposal of Andrea Austoni, an Italian designer and illustrator currently based somewhere on Poland whose work is really good, especially his Someone is Printing Souls! illustration. According to Andrea the idea of printing souls was inspired by George Carlin joke that you can see on the illustration although it is too small and I coudn’t found a bigger image of it to show you the detail although. The joke says:

“There’s a giant factory somewhere where someone has been roaming the Earth, the souls are printed by machines and they had unbelievably long rubber belts upon which the souls line up until they reach the end of the factory where someone collects them to ship them all over the world in gigantic burlap sacks”.

Clearly this is about God and how Carlin saw God’s work although I think this interpretation seems to be too simple and superficial, there must be something much deeper and profound than just that, probably talking about someone working on younger minds or else. In any case this print and the idea behind it is simple amazing, it would be rad if Andrea sell this as a print, sadly he is not. Enjoy.

SLEEP EDUCATION BY JEWELLERS

There are some music perfect for certain moments or seasons, and Jewellers was perfect for the summer and somehow their amazing album Sleep Education it also works during the autumn. Jewellers is a Newport, Wales band whose music is just beautiful, full of ethereal beats that probably fit the most under the chillwave level although it totally could fit under sublime too.

Last week I listened to Sleep Education over and over for a few days and Forward Life became my absolutely favorite song, it reflects my feelings towards this new season and the rest of the year. If you are interested into purchasing a physycal format of this beauty it will be available through The Sound of Sweet Nothing on October 10th releasing an edition of 300 12” vynyl LP that I absolutely recomend you to get -I’m getting mine-, it also includes a couple of remixes not available on the digital version which is the one I have. Enjoy.

KORN GOES DUBSTEP: ‘GET UP’ FT. SKRILLEX
If you...

KORN GOES DUBSTEP: ‘GET UP’ FT. SKRILLEX

If you ever wonder about Korn lemme start saying that their back once again but this time with a very different approach to their usual nü metal -still exist?- this time blend with dubstep. Yes, you read/listened correctly, Korn goes dubstep. After an unfortunely decade of releasing some decent and bad albums they’re trying to gain lost ground and new fans using the genre of the moment with little help of the best producers of it like Skrillex, Excision, Datsik, Noisia, Kill The Noise or 12th Planet -I had no idea who these people are, I’m not into dubstep-.

This first track is titled Get Up featuring Dj and producer Skrillex with this new and different mix of genres. At first the simple idea shocked me a little bit but after a couple of listenings I honestly think it works. Actually, I like it. Korn’s career can be separated into two: a very successful one during the 90s and a second one not so much during the 21st century after released some terrible and not too terrible albums and after some line-up changes it was clear they had to have a most needed change. Although I never though on dubstep this change sounds refreshing on them, I’m not sure if it’s the right move for an entire album of dubstep metal but it sounds great, I have the same feeling when the nü metal sound emerged from underground back in the 90s.

I think their major contribution of this new way to do metal is that they did it first, or at least they’re the first to try it althoug I’m not sure if that would be enough to revive their lost path. The Path of Totality is the name of their forthcoming album due to be released on December 6th through Roadrunner Records and it think it would be a commercial success, not necesarilly appreciated by the hardcore fans, just give them the benefit of the doubt, a benefit I’ve been giving them for 10 years. Enjoy.

I just found this art instalation by the Bangkok born now based on Birmingham, UK artist and illustrator Rook Floro -love his name btw- and my jaw still is on the floor. The sculture is titled Shadow and I don’t have words to describe it, I just know I’d love to have it as a central piece on my dream house. According to Rook the concept behind this incredible sculpture/perfomance piece we can find Carl Jung’s shadow physological theory.

“It represents my ‘shadow’ which involves my hidden desires to be different and become perfect in my own right. We always feel the pressure to be perfect by everything around us such as themedia, social network, advertisement, friends, and family. ”

I mentioned before that is part sculpture part performance because the figure sitting on the chair is actually Pook himself performing as the shadow although it’s not exactly clear which one is the shadow, the seated and complete figure or the incomplete standing one facing the light. Awesome indeed. Enjoy.

Lemme start saying that I’m not a fan of wrist watches, in fact I don’t even have one, I don’t see the point of wearing one when you can easily check the time with your cell phone not to mention that when you waer one you’re constantly checking the time and worrying about it so no thanks, but every once in a while a rad watch came out on the market and I start drooling, and this is the case. The ZAZ watch designed by Nooka is unique, I haven’t see something quite like this.

The ZAZ model is pretty amazing because it doesn’t show up the time like any other watch, instead of using numbers for digital watches or it uses 24 bars to indicate hours and 60 bars for the minutes, filling each one according to the especific time over a trasnparent screen which will create the ilusion of displaying the bars right over your arm. This new way to read the time is very futuristic and playful, perfect for geeks and 8-bit lovers, so if you’re interested into getting one you could just go here to buy it, they have it on black and white with leather band or a steel mesh one.
The other day I found the Untitled series by Ian Addison and immediately thought on the Sky Series of Eric Cahan mostly for its conceptual and colorful approach. Ian is a Brooklyn-based photographer whose particular vision made me drool a lot, especially this series. For some reason the last couple of post related to photography were about conceptual images and not more define photo series like landscapes, people or architecture, probably I’m having a conceptual phase right now, I dunno.

This series is particulary interesting for one simple reason, Ian’s camera took this is a very unique way:

“For a period in 2010, part of my photographic process included keeping a small plastic camera in my bag. Occasionally this camera would accidentally fire while inside to produce these colorful, abstract photos. These ancillary creations were always a pleasant surprise, and have served as important contributions to several projects that I have worked on ever since.”

This lucky accidents make this series quite unique and refreshing, I bet if he would try to do it on studio may not have the same outcome, it also makes you wonder who’s the photographer in here: Ian or the camera. Enjoy.

Last friday I posted an amazing preview of The Typewrite (On the 21st Century) and last night I found this typography quite randomly that continues with the typewriter theme now through a very rad typography. The Typewriter Helvetica is an amazing font made by Johannes Klein-Reesink, a 22 years old Münster, Germany based designer student whose idea of using actual parts of a typewriter is pretty cool, something that reminds me the work of Todd McLellan but this time used to create shapes and characters.

Although the idea of using parts of an object to create fonts it is very creative and singular for being a very familiar font, probably the most use nowdays which is Helvetica.

“My Idea was to write with my old typewriter, but not in the usual way!

So I took my typewriter apart and arranged it back together in the style of “Helvetica Neue Bold”.

If you’re wonder if this particular typography is functional well judge by yourself, the last image is a quatoe of Wim Crouwel so you can see the final result and if it would work with you, I’d love to see this on prints with the gray background like the first image, wouldn’t you? Enjoy.

Minimalism on architecture is not an exclusive of Japanese architecture, and even when I love the architecture made on the island there are some other countries that adopted this way of life whether as a trend or as an actual philosophy, and one of those countries is Spain where architects are doing it really great, just take a look at this gorgeous house. The Guerrero House, located on the beautiful province of Cadiz, was designed by Alberto Campos Baeza, an interesting and talented Madrid-based architect whose portfolio is quite impressive, perfect for minimalism lovers like me. And I would loke to make an emphasis on minimalist lovers because this house might have some issues for people not into that kind of architecture because this is on the extreme of that spectrum.

This rectangular house that looks like a box has the clean lines characteristic of the style not to mention the white color and thanks to the front and back courtyards is full of light accentuated because of the white walls. What I like about this house are its clean lines, the four orage trees at the both yards and open space inside that is very Japanese except for the huge space which is not. The architects did a very simetrical design with the social area as a center and leaving the private rooms on both sides or this corredor created by the yards and this huge space on the center.

Its simplicity and pure lines makes the whole difference although I undestrand if you disagree with me about the how rad this 2005 project is. Enjoy.

About two...

‘THE VIEW’ BY METALLICA & LOU REED

About two weeks ago I posted a preview of The View, the first single of Metallica’s new project in collaboration with Lou Reed which has for title Lulu. Well, finally we can listen the whole song and by so far this seems to be a huge bluff of the year. The song is not exactly bad, the sound reminded me to the Garange Inc. era but truth be told I’m far from being impressed. The video start witn an explanation behind the Lulu project:

“Over 100 years ago, a German visionary named Franks Wedekind wrote a collection of plays about a tempestuous woman named Lulu who was both a muse and a mystery.

A century later, the stories would inspire Lou Reed and Metallica to create “Lulu”, a musical narrative of the provocative plays”.

Like I said the song has the particular sound that the San Francisco quartet has during the Garage Inc. era but with Lou Reed on the vocals and lyrics, being followed later by James Hetfiel singing small parts of it. After a couple of listenings of The View I’m far from being a fan of this new project, seems to be two different songs merge forcibly into one: in one side Lou’s voice and on the other Metallica’s music. The drums seems to be way off from those first four Metallica albums and sounds closer to the Saint Anger hollow drums which, I just hope the rest of the album turns out to be way better than this first single, although being a Metallica fan for 20 years now I gotta say I’ll buy it no matter what, even when the entire album is not as good as the rest of both artists discography.

Fractions is an amazing...

‘FRACTIONS’ BY STEVEN BRIAND

Fractions is an amazing video made by a French student named Steven Briand also known as BURAYAN as a graduation short film at the l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Paris that I’m pretty sure he totally nailed it. The film is so rad because it mix perfectly live action with those kung-fu movements and stop motion animation that I bet it took a lot of time to do it.

The premise of the video is very simple yet effective, to study the interaction and boundaries between live action and stop motion without the classic chopped movements between photos, this time it’s the stop motion which is added to the live action bringing it to a whole new level, repracing with stop motion what some others whould’ve done with computer animation, and the outcome of that experimentation is nothing but astonishing. Enjoy.

The other day I was thinking about getting one of those really old typewriter, probably because nostalgia or perhaps because the need of something physical and not digital, when I found this video titled The Typewriter (On the 21st Century) by Los Angeles-based filmmakers Christopher Lockett and Gary Nicholson who in 2010 decided to take a look to that soon to be dead technology who change the world in the 19th Century after they read an article on Wired.com titled The Last Generation of Typewriter Repairman.

After the article they decided to shoot a documentaru about this technology and its survival, apparently there’s a niche for this machines yet prefer for a lot of writers, not to mention vintage lovers like yours truly. So far they just shoot a small part of this documentary but if you’re interested into being part of it you can do it trhough your kindly help by donating through they Kickstarter or directly through the Typewriter Movie page so they could finally do it properly, just as this beautiful machine and their survivors deserve. Enjoy.

One of my favorite art techniques if not my favorite is the watercolor basically because it’s very simple and anyone can do it even me, I’m very good at it especially painting skies, sunrises and sunsets, maybe one day I’ll show you some of what I’ve done. Aside from the technique, the other thing that I like in art is the occasional weird and creepy piece, and even when this is not exactly the ocassion there’s something bizarre about the watercolors you see above made by Luís Texeira, a Brazilian freelance illustrator and visual artist whose work is quite amazing.

The watercolors series above are focused more into the human figure in particular the arms and head, but what makes the whole difference is the color palette which is why it seems to be like blood and flesh, like someone that has been tortured or at least beaten even when it’s onlye people sleeping. Yes, I know what you’re thinking and no, I’m not sick, is just that the watercolor technique is commonly used to paint things like landscapes, architecture and similars not flesh and blood although this may be perfect to obtain the creepy effect because of the watercolor brushstrokes. Enjoy.

Earlier this morning I found a fantastic print series about the pop icons of Naples, one of the coolest Italian cities well known for its architecture, culture and cuisine, and football mostly because Maradona played for the Naples during big part of the 80s, and those icons are precisely represented on the illustrations made by Fabio Catapano, an Italian London-based designer, illustrator and art director whose Napulitalian. Naples Narrated by Pop Icons series is astonishing and made me wonder how they would look on my studio walls. This is Fabio’s statement towards this series:

“Naples is a city full of elements that set it apart. Whenever he tries to tell a Neapolitan of his country must first tell you about how it works in Italy and then open a small parenthesis explains that, instead, how it works in Naples.
My project is a tribute to this city, so big and so full of heroes, symbols, objects, beliefs, vices, virtues and dangers that make itunique.
An overview of each icon as a piece of a big puzzle or a book ofinstructions. We are Italians, but we first of all, the Neapolitans”.

What I like the most about this series, besides how great it is, is the how Fabio identified some of the pop icons of the city and try it to reproduce to promote it, just like the I Love NY shirt or the double deck bus of London. After I saw the series I immediately start wondering about the pop icons of my city if I’d did the same thing and lemme tell you soemthing, it wasn’t an easy exercise.

Now, I have absolutely no idea if this is just a project of his or a commisioned work, if they’re only images or actually prints for sale, the only thing I know is that they’re so cool looking, I bet some of you are thinking the same, right? Enjoy.
